कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः ।
धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत ॥ ४० ॥

kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ .
dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmo’bhibhavatyuta .. 40 ..
On the extinction of a family, the immemorial dharmas * of that family disappear. When the dharmas disappear, impiety (adharma) overtakes the whole family. †
The duties and ceremonies practised by the family in accordance with the scriptural command.
Of the destroyed (according to some), of the destroyer (according to some others).
